  • Simply put, before you all start re-covering all the same points again, why not take a look through everything that came before over here and then tell us if you have anything worthwhile to add.
I know that in the course of the 42 pages, we already covered the "get tougher skin" argument and why it's something we hear all the time but which isn't actually a solution to the problem. Also, fairly sure we covered the idea of good sportsmanship and why losing games != an excuse for offensive rage.

Needless to say, I don't really want to see another repeat of the last Harassment thread which devolved into actual harassment at many points, etc. So re-covering all the same points again seems fruitless to me.

Love that someone quoted me and missed the entire point of my post.

Please read, please pay attention, please don't necro this thread without a good reason to - please don't just repeat the same stuff we covered over the span of 40-something pages.

I love the part where you did the very same thing in the post that you're saying that was done to.

The problem with the 40 page discussion you had there is you all think there is a solution to the problem and think the tough skin argument is meant to be a solution as well. The entire argument hinges on the idea that this problem can never really be solved. You can't reprogram or even mitigate the basic behavior of millions of people with a system in a video game.

For that matter, implying there needs to be a good reason for offensive rage is silly too. Everyone knows it's bad, but they also know it's not something that can really be prevented.

The solution suggested in the video is a naive approach to a big problem and underestimates the underlying causes of the behavior they're trying to correct.

Also, please point me to another relevant thread in the forums.

First off The internet is not a linear environment. It wishes it was but it is not. This Video is linked right off of youtube and the primary Video. This is a Response Thread for the video which means it is Invalid for Necro treatment. The 42 page FORUM Topic should NOT be necroed because it is NOT Directly linked from the video. Sorry but your argument is invalid on that stance.

Next If you use the words "Force," "Mute" and "Microsoft" in a video it's going to be brought up about from time to time. Hell there are plenty of Videos on here I Plan on giving my opinion on.

Finally after 40 pages "Page 1 of 42 [ 1028 posts ] " It looses it "Join ability" because those of us who are NEW to the forum are not going to read it. You'll be lucky if we read the last 2 pages before we post.

The only way this Topic could legitimately be locked is if the Video to it were removed and I don't see that happening.

To sum it up, Main thread to Video means can be necroed any time, New People to the topic, Too lazy to read it all, Internet time is not Linear. Understood?

I'm going to lock the thread for the following reasons:

Firstly I feel as if the discussion has run its course somewhat.

Secondly I would propose that to continue the discussion, as its moved somewhat away from the Episode itself, that another thread should be made with a link to this one for further reading. Another reason for this is quite simply that theres too many people just jumping into the thread without reading any of it and given how the conversation has progressed I think that another thread would solve this issue.

And finally, page 42 seems as good a reason as any to throw the towel.

Sadly, what you don't realise is that the 42 page thread WAS the response thread. That is what became of the original response thread. We ended up having to break it away from the episode and make a new thread because it was just going in complete circles - it remains as a reference to the prior discussion for people to look over before posting here, so that we do not end up going in circles again.

Sorry, my argument takes into account the way things turned out with regards to the original response thread.

If you can't be bothered reading the previous discussion on the topic, then don't be upset when people simply tell you that you're saying things we all already said before when the episode thread was active and move on.

In most cases, yes, but this thread has been one which has consistently devolved into arguments and harassment - whilst discussing harassment - to avoid it going in circles and repeating the same problems it did for a month after the episode airing, we will advise people look at the prior discussion.

The problem with the 40 page discussion you had there is you all think there is a solution to the problem and think the tough skin argument is meant to be a solution as well.

Actually we didn't ALL think there's a solution to the problem, there was a lot of discussion as to whether this can even be solved, a lot of back and forth on that topic.

I actually DON'T think the "tough skin" argument is a solution, I'm actually against the statement because it gets thrown around often. In the scope of 40+ pages I've already exhausted my explanation of why.

This is my issue, people keep just recycling the same points over and over again.

For that matter, implying there needs to be a good reason for offensive rage is silly too. Everyone knows it's bad, but they also know it's not something that can really be prevented.

And as I said, you mistook my post, I was not stating any of MY views, just some of the topics that have already been covered in the previous thread - I was merely pointing out that unless you have something new to bring to the discussion, at this point a lot has already been discussed and people aren't going to be as willing to retread old ground.

You interpret that post you quoted as me expressing views, when it isn't, it was meant to be a call to NOT simply recycle prior discussion points, instead you quoted that post and proceeded to discuss points already covered - thus why I said you missed the point.

  • No, not being able to use a particular platform to express your views is not censorship. This applies to as much to being automuted on a voice chat service that's part of an online gaming platform as Julie Burchill getting a column pulled from the Observer (though why it was published there in the first place is mystifying) for, essentially, being undiluted transphobic bile.

You just had to bring that up and remind me of its existence, huh? XP
